LOFT K

High above Vienna, a multi storey loft rests in the open horizon of the city. A kitchen space filled with different materials was missing a unifying voice, a surface that could hold together everything that came together there. Surfaces that once pulled in different directions were shaped into walls that breathe, remember and allow the architecture to settle into one coherent mood.

CONCEPT

In the kitchen, tile, timber, rolled steel and stone needed a surface that could bring them into dialogue. Together with the architects from Baukooperative, we tested materials in the workshop until we found the right composition: a cement based plaster tinted with umber pigment and embedded with black marble chips. Through these aggregates and pigments, the wall gathers the surrounding elements into a calm, coherent whole.

FOUNDATION

The walls were built in a single mineral layer, applied over a carefully corrected substrate to create a calm and continuous ground. The fine grain shimmers within the tone of the earth pigment and echoes the dark steel and stone surfaces. Like a soft carpet, it gathers every material into a shared ground.

SURFACE

Once cured, the surface was sanded to expose the marble particles. Their dark specks provide a subtle rhythm against the umber ground. The plaster remains slightly undulating, distinct from the straight lines of cabinetry and beams. This waviness bears the trace of the hand and introduces an organic rhythm.

DECAY

Finally, the surface was treated with natural wax, deepening the pigments and leaving a gentle sheen. Over time, a patina will emerge, darkening softly and revealing traces of use. Through a collaboration shaped by careful stages, the final walls not only matched the architect’s visualisation but surpassed it — a testament to the strength of dialogue and craft.
